Reading Goals – 2012

Projects, challenges and goals. You know I love ‘em all.

The Goodreads Reading Challenge
Last year, in the beginning of 2011, I stumbled upon Goodreads. Goodreads is an online community and a holy grail to everyone that loves to read.

It’s best described as an online bookclub where you can share your reviews and keep track of all the books you have read, are currently reading and want to read in the future.

But we were talking about projects, challenges and goals. And that is where The Goodreads Reading Challenge comes in. When you sign up for Goodreads you can enter the number of books you would like to read this year and a little widget will keep track of how you’re doing.

This means that you will know exactly how many books you are behind or ahead. And for the first time ever I am on the right track! Ladies and gentlemen, hereby I present, my progressbar:

So, as you can see I want to read 50 books this year. It shouldn’t be a problem. There are 52 weeks in a year and I think it’s very doable to read one book a week.

The first read book of 2012 is Julie & Julia by Julie Powell. It took me three months to read the damn book!
I loved the project on itself, and I always like to read about bloggers but Julie is just so… gross! Every time I read the book I felt like disinfecting my hands. Who in the world has maggots in her kitchen? That’s just wrong!

Are you participating in any reading challenges this year? If not, have you set yourself a reading goal?

  1. Wow… I am new to wordpress this year.. I just started my blog, it was my resolution.. I’m documenting my following of the movement Every Monday Matters…. it’s very much along the lines of something you might like to do, anyway.. I stumbled across your blog and have to say I am SO excited to see someone as enthusiastic about Goodreads as I am!

    • Hi Kelly, I’ve added the book to my wishlist. It sounds like a great project to participate in! Good luck on the project, I think you are already doing a great job.

      • Thank you much, I appreciate it very much… I tried the Goodreads reading challenge last year as well, and I think I may have hit my mark… I just read so fast I would forget to go on and check off my books so it never really had an accurate account, lol. Maybe this year I will be more proactive with it, good luck with yours as well!… Again, I look forward to reading more from your blog!

  2. I love Goodreads! I’ve never made a reading goal, but I think that’s a fun idea. I think I’ll set my sights on finishing books I’ve never managed to finish before because they seemed so daunting. Good luck with your fifty books!

    • Great goal, I think I have to do something similar to yours. There are so many books on my shelves that I’ve never finished reading. Which book are you really not looking forward to read? I have a real hard time with reading Love in the time of cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Every single time I read a few pages and put it away. Thanks!

  3. I have been using Amazon Book list on LinkedIn to keep track of what I read but I can’t share it with friends and family outside of LinkedIn. I think I’ll check out Goodreads. I too am interested in reading 50 books this year. I’ll look for you on Goodreads. Thanks for the “like” and the info.

    • Hi Paula, I’ve never heard of Amazon Book list but I can tell you that Goodreads is worth checking out. And since you are a fellow blogger: Goodreads has a lot of fun widgets so you can share any progress with your readers. Good luck on your reading goal, how many books have you read so far?

  5. I’m ahead by one book on my GR challenge… that never happened last year because I always seemed to be behind.

My goals are mostly to just read the books that I have on the shelf, and I’m going to try not to purchase very many this year so that I can concentrate on that goal.

    • It’s a great feeling when the progress bar says something positive for a change, isn’t it? Now the trick is, for me at least, to stay on the right track, haha.

Great reading goal! I couldn’t do the same, haha, new books seems to just hop on the self when I’m not looking ;).

  7. My first book that I’m re-tackling is The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I like it, but I just can’t seem to read more than a few pages at a time.

Contests on Goodreads? I need to check that out, too.
